Sandy --

This man has two service files - one with Co "C", 15th Alabama Partisan Ranger Battalion; another with Co "C", 56th Alabama Regiment. The last record on file for W N Grant dated Calhoun Stn MS, Mar 30, 1864, shows him absent on a fifteen-day leave since Jan 26, 1864.

At some point in 1864 Capt Peck's company was transferred to the 10th Mississippi Cavalry as 2nd Co "F". On the final roll dated July 15, 1864, he is reported as absent, sick in an Atlanta GA hospital since June 15, 1864.

Both the 56th Alabama and 10th Mississippi Cavalry Regiments served in Brig Gen William W Ferguson's cavalry brigade. A graduate of the U S Military Academy at West Point (1857), Ferguson led one of the brigades in "Red" Jackson's Cavalry Division during the Atlanta Campaign and Sherman's march to the sea. As the war came to an end, Ferguson was ordered to meet President Davis at Greensboro NC. The brigade formed part of the President's escort until parting company at Washington GA. At that point survivors disbanded and went home.
