What was happening to cause so much desertion in the 33rd Miss. Inf., Co. E, and the 7th Miss. Inf., Co. B, in Dec 1862 and especially Jan 1863? (These are the units I am familiar with.) It was too soon for Grierson's raid through their homeland. Was it that the men were given furloughs when Johnston took command and they simply did not return to duty?
