How to distinguish one William Smith from another

I need some help here. My gg grandfather was names James William Smith. He went by William Smith. He was living in Tippah County, MS in the 1860 census. Trying to find a William Smith is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. I have found a W. J. Smith with the 23rd Regiment of MS Infantry, Company E that was organized in Ripley, MS and enlisted in Iuka, MS 8/24/61. Then there is another W.J. Smith in the 2nd Mississippi State Cavalry, Bruce's Batallion that was formed May 14, 1862 in Tippah County. How in all things Confederate do I figure out which one is him? His wife's name was Martha and he was born in 1829. Anyone have any ideas? I have looked at both rolls and nothing is beside his name.
