LeFaucheux Revolvers in Mississippi

While searching for evidence of Confederate armory issues of revolvers, came across this French import. Evidently these came through the blockade and were shipped from Mobile to Meridian. About 30 cases of the LeFaucheux double-action pinfire revolver arrived at the Confederate armory at Meridian on Jan 26 and Jan 29, 1864. Shipments included --

1350 LeFaucheux revolvers
54000 cartridges
1350 pouches
1350 'cordones' (holsters)

Since Meridian was evacuated two weeks later, these must have been issued quickly. Confederate cavalry brigades in the area were those of Brig Gens Samuel W Ferguson and 'Red' Jackson. Note also that LeFaucheux revolvers appear among arms reported in General Forrest's cavalry during May 1864.

Sometimes the interest in Confederate-manufactured arms causes us to overlook the importance of imported weapons like this one.
