The 4th Regiment Confederate Infantry (also known as the 1st Regiment Alabama, Tennessee, and Mississippi Infantry) was formed about December 9, 1861, with ten companies; four from Alabama, two from Mississipi, and four from Tennessee. It was captured at Island No. 10, April 8, 1862, and after exchange in September, 1862, the companies were re-organized and transferred to other commands. Companies, A, G, H, and K became (2nd) Companies I, A, C, and D, respectively of the 42nd Regiment Tennessee Infantry, and Companies B, C, D, E, F, and I, became Companies C, G. E, D, F, and H, respectively, of the 54th Regiment Alabama Infantry
