The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

My interest is primarily in the 2nd Mississippi and it's activities. During the closing days of the war, I haven't been able to locate a great deal of primary source material that deals with that time frame. I have come to the conclusion however, that when the regiment was surrounded with its back to Hatcher's Run on April 2, 1865 (about 100 effectives left in the ranks), the entire balance of the regiment that was not on detached duty or in hospitals was captured there. Other researchers have suggested from regimental studies of other units in Davis's Brigade that some of the men may have escaped by swimming across Hatcher's Run, but I have my doubts about those claims. The handful of men that surrendered a week later with Davis's Brigade at Appomattox were almost all certainly on detached duty at the time, at least those belonging to the 2nd Mississippi.

I would obviously be interested in your own findings. If I can help with any specifics on the 2nd Mississippi, please let me know.

Mike
