26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry and Camp Chase

The hightest regimental fatality loss at Camp Chase, that have stone inscriptions, due to the capture of Fort Donelson prisoners was the 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry with three.

Note: The following is only the Confederates who died at Camp Chase from Fort Donelson who now have tombstones at the Camp Chase Cemetery. There are many who died at Camp Chase from Fort Donelson who do not have stones.

3) Humphrey Posey EARLEY Company G 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry Rank either Corporal or Lieutenant. Died March 8, 1862 Double inscription on tombstone # 2065

4) William T. ABERNATHY Company B 32nd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry Rank 2nd Lieutenant. Died March 10, 1862 Double inscription on tombstone # 2065

5) Benjamin Leroy WILKES 3rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry (Clack's) Rank Captain; Commissary Officer. Died March 9, 1862 Double inscription on tombstone # 2066. According to his tombstone he is buried twice with himself.

6) Wiley J. RAST Company A 26th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry Rank 2nd Lieutenant. Died March 15, 1862 Double inscription on tombstone # 2067

8) John S. GRIFFIS Company D 53rd Regiment, Tennessee Infantry. Rank 3rd Lieutenant. Died March 21, 1862. Double inscription on tombstone # 2068

9) Alexander CASSEDAY General Buckner's Staff. Rank Major Died March 21, 1862 (Highest Ranking Confederate to die at Camp Chase during the War, however his body was taken back to Louisville, Kentucky a few days after his death and is buried at the Cave Hill Cemetery) Double inscription on tombstone # 2068

Regimental breakdown by Kentucky=1* Alexander Casseday was on General Buckner's Staff and as such was not assigned to a regiment. Since he was born in Kentucky and was an officer in a Kentucky unit prior to being on Buckner's Staff I have elected to place him with the State of Kentucky.

Buckner's Staff=1 (Casseday-Assistant Adjutant stone 2068 however was moved to Cave Hill Cemetery at Louisville, Kentucky and re-interred there on April 4, 1862.
