Re: Mississippi Civil War letter

Rhonda,

The only intelligence we obtain is the writer is Amelia posting a letter to her husband Herbert writing from Magnolia Grove, Miss. sometime in January, 1865 responding to his post of December 17, 1864 she had received that very day.

Further, the best guess is that Magnolia Grove is located in the vicinity of Hernado, DeSota County, Miss., about 20 miles below Memphis.

They discussed the state of the country early in the war and she pleaded he resign his commission in this letter.

Inasmuch as the notation on the letter is simply "Captured letter," it could very well be that the letter was obtained by the Yankees during transient, and not off Herbert when captured.

That would throw the search for Herbert wide open.
