Joseph Harvey Woods 18th Mississippi

Resting in the Greensboro Cemetery in Mississippi is a fairly recent Confederate marker in honor of Private Joseph Harvey Woods of Company G 18th Mississippi Infantry. Find A Grave Memorial# 90457928 The following is a short biography of him that I've been doing with all former Confederates within the 3rd Maryland Cavalry.

"Joseph H. Woods aka Jos. H. Wood aka Joseph Harvey Woods - A former Confederate with Company G 18th Regiment, Mississippi Infantry. He was with Longstreet's Corps; McLaws' Division; Barksdale's Brigade at the Gettysburg campaign. Company G was known as the "Camden Rifles" Confederate CMSR's report him enlisting on August 8, 1862 at Brookhaven, Mississippi for 3 years and listed his name as Jos. H. Woods. Confederate CMSR's reported he told Confederate authorities he had been born in Greensboro, Mississippi and prior to enlisting had been a school teacher and was single. Federal POW records report him being a prisoner on May 3, 1863 at Fredericksburg, Virginia. (Note: Sometimes known and the 2nd Battle of Fredericksburg it was part of the Chancellorsville campaign.) Federal POW records report him as being among the prisoner of war at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C., on May 5, 1863 and was listed as being paroled on May 19, 1863. Confederate CMSR's next report him as taken prisoner while in route to his command at Gettysburg. Federal POW records report him as a prisoner during the Gettysburg campaign and as being desirous of joining the Union Army and being transferred from Fort Delaware to the 3rd Maryland Cavalry and told Union authorities he had been conscripted into the Confederate Army and had been born in Mississippi. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him enlisting in Company G on September 18th and mustered into service on September 24, 1863 at age 22 and list his physical description as blue eyes; brown hair; dark complexion; 5' 10" in height and told 3rd Maryland Cavalry authorities he had been born in Choctaw County, Mississippi and had been a teacher prior to the War and signed his name as Joseph H. Woods. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him being promoted to Corporal on his muster date of September 24, 1863 and then being promoted to Sergeant on December 4, 1863. According to Company muster roll history Company G 3rd Maryland Cavalry started embarking on the steamer from Camp Schenck near Baltimore, Maryland on January 3, 1864 and set sail on the steamer "Empire City" on January 6, 1864 for New Orleans, Louisiana and arrived on January 16, 1864. Records also state that there was one case of small pox on board and that the company also lost eight horses while at sea. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as being wounded while on picket duty on February 17, 1864 in Louisiana and as being absent in a United States Hospital in New Orleans, Louisiana since March 11, 1864. 3rd Maryland Cavalry CMSR's report him as staying at the St. Louis Hospital in New Orleans until the end of the War and then being transferred to the Satterlee hospital in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where he was mustered out of service on July 10, 1865. He would have been transferred to Company F in name only due to the consolidation of the regiment to battalion strength on December 9, 1864 since Company G no longer existed after that date. (Note: According to the History and roster of Maryland Volunteers, War 1861-5 prepared by under the authority of the General Assembly of Maryland his name is carried in the roster of Company G and listed as being discharged on July 10, 1865) He filed for a Federal pension on July 16, 1883 and used Company F and G of the 3rd Maryland Cavalry as his units. His widow filed for a pension but it is not dated. Find A Grave Memorial# 90457928 and Find A Grave Memorial# 11163553 both have a photograph of a recent Confederate tombstone in his honor. While his birth dates and death dates appear to be correct Joseph Harvey Woods memorial mentions nothing of his service to the United States."
