Captain Thomas J. Stokes F/11 MS

Thomas J. Stokes writes in Confederate Veteran magazine (vol. 23, 1915, pp. 127-128) that (as a Lieutenant in Company F of the 11th Mississippi Infantry) after being wounded at Sharpsburg (Antietam), he was taken across the Potomac to the home of "Major Morgan" at Sheperdstown, (West) Virginia. This is possibly the Falling Spring-Morgan's Grove property that still stands and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Afterwards promoted and taking command of the company, Captain Stokes was wounded and captured at the stone wall at Gettysburg during the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge on 3 July. He was sent to Johnson's Island, Ohio, where he was mistakenly recorded as Capt. T. J. Strikes of Brookville, Mississippi.
