Dear Virgil
Yes this is correct, I think
Before the Civil War, Milldale was a booming little village located about a Mile up the Creek Bottom from the Edge of the Yazoo Bluffs.
Its location is well documented with the Deed to Baker's Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church which Church Plat shows the Massive Spring that flowed from the hills.
There was a huge Confederate Army in the area from soon after Shiloh until the Skirmish at Big Black River Bridge, about the Middle of May, 1863. (Approx a year i would think.)
just before the Siege of Vicksburg began, regardless.
The Confederates abandoned it and moved into the Citidel at Vicksburg.
The Yankees took over and kept a large force there until they left in 1876 or there about.
It would appear the Yankees completely destroyed the town of Milldale, it was gone after the Civil War.
The new town was named Redwood.
The Louisvile, New Orleans & Texas Rail road was constructed through the area in about 1884. And yes it was a Mile or Two down Skilli (I must find out how to spell this thing, Indian name and complicated.) Creek at the edge of the Yazoo Bluffs.
At this location, the village of Redwood was about a a quarter mile from the Yazoo River.
The town was named for Thomas Redwood, a pioneer settler at Milldale.
Every thing up there,
with the exception of the Highway & Road rights - a - way and the Rail Road right - a - way is Private land.
The Only exception is the small and unmaintained park at Snyder's Bluff which is actually the original right - a - way, (and now abandoned) of United States Highway # 61.
This is a shame. for Snyder's Bluff is one of the most historic sites in the State. More about this later.
Milldale is completely disappeared. Only the Graham family Cemetery (7 - 8 Stones as I remember,) and the remenants of the Swimming Pool remain.) The Pool ws consructed soon after World War II. I swam in it a few times in the 1950s. Had no connectionwith the Civil War.
