Re: 8th Battalion MS Infantry (Consolidated)

I believe you may be referring to the consolidation of several Mississippi units that was made in the last days of the war in North Carolina. They were part of Sharp's Brigade of Hill's Division, S D Lee's Corps

8th Ms Bn (consol 5th, 8th, & 32d Ms, & 3d Ms Bn), Capt J. Y. Carmack

4/9/65 Near Smithfield, NC-General Johnston reorganized the army on April 9, the same day that Gen Lee met with Gen Grant in the McLean house at Appomattox CH. The army had seen other consolidations, but this was more drastic than anything experienced before. The army had too many undersized Regts & an overabundance of General officers. Many Regts were combined into new Consolidated Regts. Johnston ordered that the massive reorganization move “with all possible speed, Sherman will not give us much rest.” In another order he wrote that consolidation begin “without delay.”
