Good question, but I don't think so. James was James M. and he served in Co. C, survived the war, and is buried in Smith County. The J.H. Bryant you refer to was enlisted at Pinckney, which at the time was a community in Newton County. There looked to be a likely candidate on the census for Newton County named John Bryant, age 16 in 1860, but it appears he lived into the 1920s. J.H. Bryant's records only use his initials, and not a first name.
