Hartwell, Musician, Company I, 16th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, enlisted August 1, 1861 at Lynchburg, Va. for 12 months, reduced to the ranks, Private, Oct. 25, 1861, recorded at end of year 1861 as on Extra Duty as Musician, detailed as Band Master Nov. 25[?], 1861, subsequently Regimental Chief Musician, - Sept. 1, 1864 dropped from Rolls Chief Musician - Regt. transferred to rolls of Staff & Band , surrendered and paroled April 9, 1865 at Appomattox Court House, Va.
