Life in the Vicksburg Trenches

06 16 1863 [Tuesday]

It has been cool, cloudy, and raining a little. Every night when the firing ceases, some of our men and some of the enemy hold a social chat with each other. Neither side gives the other any information that would be of any benefit to their commanders. I believe the enemy has spies inside of our lines because when ever we get up any “grapevine” news, they are certain to ask our men about it in less than 24 hours. Sometimes when they go to shoot they will tell us to get into our holes.
