The Mississippi in the Civil War Message Board

Senatobia, MS

I recently posted this story about Mary V. Hughston, my ggg grandmother on Family Search. Thought I would share it here too.

In the early part of the War, Sanford Venable Hughston served in the State Conscription Dept. which today we would call the Draft Board. Later in the War, he and the man who was his superior in that Dept. joined a state cavalry unit.

He rode over to Senatobia to visit his mother and sister. They were well however the same letter mentions the poor plight of many families in northern MS, suffering from hunger and near starvation during the winter months. His granddaughter Virginia Hemphill Stainback had donated several of his war letters to the MS Dept of Archives and History."
