On our first training dives at Sub School, New London Conn., my buddy, on the Bridge [Dick Mack] with his two Lookouts, got the order from the Skipper "Dive the boat Mr. Mack." Which Mack ordered "Dive, Dive the boat, Ooga, Ooga'" [sp?] Clear the bridge." As the 2nd Lookout headed down the ladder, his foul weather jacket billowed out catching the toggle of the conning tower hatch. As trained, the Quartermaster, without question, completed closing the hatch and spun the cleats closed. As he was about to access the ladder, Mack saw the hatch closed and the wheel spinning with the water reaching his boots.

Fortunately, the skipper in the conning tower, ordered "Emergency, Emergency, Surface the boat." Once fully surfaced, Mack was ordered back to the bridge to take the next dive.

Fortunately, I had no such problems.
