Anita,

I would "guess" that his death, if caused due to battle rather than illness, may have resulted from the participation of the 14th NC Inf. in the battle of Fair Oaks or Seven Pines, VA, fought May 31-June 1, 1862. The 14th NC Inf. was a part of D.H. Hill's Division, George B. Anderson's Brigade (2nd Brigade).

Second Brigade - Brig.-Gen. George B. Anderson (w)

Col. C. C. Tew:
2d NC Inf, Col. C. C. Tew;
4th NC Inf, Col. E. A. Osborne;
14th NC Inf, Lieut.-Col. William A. Johnston;
30th NC Inf, Col. Francis M. Parker;
Ala. Battery, Capt. R. A. Hardaway
