Bryce,
Three books that you might find helpful on early Eastern NC:
"A Rising Star of Promise: The Civil War Odyssey of David Jackson Logan" ed. by Samuel N. Thomas, Jr. & Jason H. Silverman (Logan was with the 17th SC stationed in Kinston at the time of Foster's Raid.
"Swamp Doctor: The Diary of a Union Surgeon in the Virginia and North Carolina Marshes" ed. Thomas P. Lowry, M.D.
"In the Country of the Enemy: Civil War Reports of a Massachusetts Corporal" ed. William C. Harris
The good news is a book is forth coming on Foster's Raid, by Randy Sauls, who lives in Goldsboro. Keep an eye out for its release soon.
If your looking for late war:
Mark Bradley's: "Last Stand in the Carolinas" & "This Astounding Close: the Road to Bennett Place".
Hughes book on Bentonville is on my bookshelf as well.
Dr. Chris Fonvielle's "Last Rays of Departing Hope: The Campaign for Wilmington and Fort Fisher"
Eric Wittenberg's recent release "The Battle of Monroe's Crossroads" is excellent in its coverage of the horse Soldier during the Carolinas Campaign.
Mark Moore, North Carolina's superb map maker has published several books covering the battles for Wilmington and Fort Fisher, as well as the Battle of Averasboro and Bentonville.
Hope you find this helpful.
