Re: Military Schools prior to 1865

There was the NC Military Academy, open at Charlotte for about three years immediately before the war under the direction of D. H. Hill.

In Asheville there was the Asheville Military Academy which likewise operated for only a few years before the war. This building was on the grounds of the current William Randolph Elementary School on Montford Avenue, which was then called Academy Street. The military school never resumed operation after the war. The building was used by the Confederate Military Courts during the war. When the City of Asheville began a school system in the late 1880s this building became one of the city's first three public schools. It remained in use as an elementary school until the late 1940s, when it was torn down and replaced by the current structure. The only remaining vestiges are the rock wall on the Montford Avenue (east) side of the parking lot - this is where the school stood, and was the playground of the current building for generations, before teacher parking became more important. On the opposire side of the parking lot, the west side, there are massive rock retaining walls dating from the construction of the military school.
