Thnaks. Since my post, I located a little bit of information in a history of Orange County, but the article you cited will certainly have a great deal more. I learned that Col. C. C. Tew, who founded the academy, was from South Carolina, and the honor graduate in the first class to graduate from The Citadel, which certainly accounts in part for the large number of South Carolinians who attended the school in its relatively brief existence.
