Laurie,
The flag of the Catawba Rangers is an absolutely beautiful full-fringed blue banner. The obverse (front face) shows a palmetto tree, brown trunk, green fronds, on a grassy island. A white banner arches over and another arches under. The tree is surrounded by an open-topped garland wreath of white and red flowers. The reverse has a red 5-pointed star in the center. To the the left of the star is "S" in gold; to the right is a "C" in gold. Below the star is a hand with index finger pointed skyward. A gold garland of lilies. White banners over and under overall.
This flag is in the collection of the Confederate Relic Room in Columbia, S.C. It is probably not on display due to limited space in the museum, but if you were to call John Bigham (Curator of Education) or William J. Long (Curator of History) at 803/737-8097, I believe either would set up an appointment for you to view the flag of your ancestor. I believe they also may have photographs that you can purchase at a very reasonable price.
Good luck. Keep in touch.
