George Washington Lawson entered West Point from his native Tennessee on July 1, 1826. He was brevetted 2nd Lieutenant of the 2nd United States Artillery upon graduation on July 1, 1830.

His resignation is dated June 30, 1831, with his death occurring sometime in 1832.
