It has been quite sometime since I have looked at the information on this, but I seem to recall that Col. Saml. D. Lowe is said to have been a Colonel in the "reserves" after his injury at Gettysburg. In fact, if I recall correctly, the photo of him in the archives at Lincolnton is said to be of him in the reserves (and dressed as a colonel). I have never seen that picture, but he is mounted on a horse. Just thought this might be a possibility for you to look into further.
