This unit (AKA Findley's Battalion) was under the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida; Hardee's Corps; McLaw’s Division; Colonel John C. Fiser’s Brigade at Bentonville and Avery, NC during the Carolina Campaign in April 1865. It appears to me that this battalion formed in Spring of 1864. Unlike most home guard units, it saw some pretty heavy fighting.

Also in the brigade at that time were the:

1st Georgia Infantry Regiment (Regulars)
6th Georgia Reserves
2nd Georgia Battalion Reserves
27th Georgia Infantry Battalion

On Feb. 3, 1865, the 5th Ga. Reserves had 1 KIA, 8 WIA's, and 1 MIA at the engagement at River's Bridge, where they were detached from Harrison's Brigade (Col. George P. Harrison, Jr., 32nd Georgia Infantry) to the command of Lieutenant-Colonel Bacon.

To add to the confusion, there were several Georgia reserve, State guard, and home guard units by similar names, including:

5th Ga. Inf. State Guards Regt.
5th Ga. Inf. State Guards Battln.
5th Ga. Militia Regt.
5th Ga. Reserves

And, then you had the P.A.C.s units:

5th Ga. Cavalry Regt.
5th Ga. Infantry Regt.

I bring these up just so you can be aware of them as you research further, so you can try to avoid any confusion.
