Pvt. Joseph L. Phipps mustered on 4-26-1861 into Co.B,12th North Carolina Inf. He is listed as " 20 year old painter from Granville County." He was wounded 6-27-1862 at the battle of Gaines Mill in Virginia. He was promoted to Corporal on 9-1-1864. He surrendered at Appomattox Court House,Virginia 4-9-1865. The 12th was part of the N.C. Brigades of Robert E.Lee's Army of Northern Virginia. My g,g,grandfather,David Land from Wilkes County, served in Co.I of the 13th Inf. ( might have been the same brigade.)
