Re: I need a little help -- Alternate Spellings

Beautiful explanation. I would add one other point, and that is documents of the period were pen written on poor paper, over the years folded many time, ink ran, corners developed holes, etc. Cursive writing was easily incorredtly transcirbed, transcriptions thus abounded.

A case in point is the records of one Capt. Cawood, 43rd Tennessee Infantry, his records state he was wounded at Vicksburg and transported to Mobile, Alabama via New Orleans, July 24, 1863 and died at Pt. Clorr August 3/5, 1863. Turns out, I found that this was Pt. Clear, Alabama, the site of the Grand Hotel Confederate hospital on the Eastern coast of Mobile Bay, Eureka! We now have a VA provided Confederate tombstone marker placed there for him.

Thanks,

George Martin
