Sandy Foundation community is centered on a crossroad located on US 258 about 8 miles south of Kinston. It had a post office during the Civil war period. It is referred to in the Union official records of Gen. Fosters raid in December of 1862.

Sandy Bottom is an intersection of a community about 8 miles southwest of Kinston along NC 55. Gen. Foster also passed through this community after capturing Kinston of Dec. 14, 1862. His goal was to destroy the Wilmington-Weldon RR bridge at Goldsboro, thereby cutting off a major supply line to Gen. Lee in Va.
