had a legend in my family of great great uncle who went to civil war, and never came back, noone knew what had ever come of him, deserted or dead. on one military site, i was able to find him on casualty list, john w. birch, wounded and died at Gaines Mill, 7days battle on June 27, 1862. His regiment, the 5th NC Infantry, evidently kept some incomplete sorry records, can't find hardly anything on them, which probably led to his family never being notified, and him not being found for 140 some odd years. Does anyone have more info. or ideas on how to find more information on this regiment? and possible burial sites at Gaines Mill for those wounded and killed at that battle? Any info is appreciated.
