There are a quite a number of records in his service file, twenty-six in all. He was captured during the fighting on May 10, 1864, and sent to Point Lookout MD military prison. On August 3, 1864, he was forwarded to prison at Elmira NY, also known as Hell-mira. Cummings survived the winter there and on March 2, 1865, was sent to the James River for exchange. He was paroled on May 16, 1865, Greensboro NC.
