Muster roll of Company B, 18th North Carolina

Rutgers University Special Collections and Archives has an original muster roll dated 31 August 1863 from Company B of the 18th North Carolina Regiment. The roll is missing a piece from the upper center but all the names are visible. The roll covers the period 30 June to 31 August. Officers listed are Captain Marcus W. Buie, 1st Lieutenant Tho. K. Wiggins (shown as on detached duty in NC), and 2nd Lieutenant Camden Lewis. Of the 83 personnel listed, five are shown as never having reported to the company, and seven are listed as deserters (two from 28 March '63, three from 5 June '63, and two from 11 December 1863 - ?). Some of the rest are listed as absent wounded at home or in the hospital, or sick. Those identified from the Gettysburg battle are 4th Sergeant St--- Dennis (wounded and captured), Corporal T. W. Singletary (wounded and captured), and Privates Geo. G. King, David T. Pate, and J. F. Rackly (all wounded and captured). Private Snowden (spelling?) Hester was captured at Falling Waters (on the retreat), and R. J. Cheshire is listed as missing at Falling Waters and presumed taken prisoner.
