Randolph & Montgomery Home Guards

I would like to find rosters of, or even confirm the existence of, a Randolph and Montgomery County Home Guard Unit during the Civil War.

Family lore is as follows: Samuel T. Allen was supposedly made a Captain in the Randolph County Home Guard. His unit was upposedly stationed near Troy (Montgomery County?!). He reportedly had a 400-acre plantation (farm?) near Star. I do know he bought a farm in 1858 that straddled the Montgomery/Moore County line. His birth date is 1-6-1830. He left NC due to lawlessness and strife at the end of the war, and left for Pana, IL in about 1866, and died there in 1886.

Any suggestions about how I can verify his service, or find documentation of either county's Home Guard organization???

Many thanx,
J.D. Allen
