Jesse Elihu Luther (1843-1946), Co. F, 37th NC INF

In Jay Hoar's book - The South's Last Boys in Gray", Professor Hoar indicated Jesse Elihu Luther served with Company F, 37th North Carolina, and that Luther was at Gettysburg in July 1863. Luther did attend the July 1938 75th anniversary celebration @ Gettysburg.

This gentleman does not appear in the Compiled Service Records (Fold3) for the 37th North Carolina; nor does his name appear in the Soldiers And Sailors website maintained by the National Park Service.

There are Luther's with the 37th NC, but not a Jesse Luther.

Any other sources for me to verify Jesse Elihu Luther's service and presence @ Gettysburg in July 1863 ?

Due to the phony pension claims made during the Great Depression and afterward, I'm leery of information found in pension applications. If Luther did serve with the Army of Northern Virginia, there should be a service record slip for him, especially in a command such as the 37th NC where the records appear to be intact.

Any assistance or suggestions would be appreciated.

Sincerely,

Greg C. White
