Robert A. Thornburg (1848-1944), 43rd NC INF

In Jay Hoar's book - "The South's Last Boys in Gray", Professor Hoar indicated Robert A. Thornburg (1848-1944) served in the 43rd NC INF and that he participated in the Pickett-Pettigrew-Trimble charge of July 3, 1863, at Gettysburg.

In the Compiled Service Records (Fold3) for the 43rd NC INF, there is no one by the name of Robert A. Thornburg or Thornberg.

No one by that name appears in the Soldiers And Sailors website maintained by the National Park Service.

Thornburg only appears on the 1930 and 1940 NC census records. He does appear on a 1915 Kansas census, where he is buried.

Are there any other sources available, other than pension applications, to confirm Thornburg's Confederate service and possible presence @ Gettysburg in 1863 ?

Thank you for any assistance and suggestions.

Sincerely,

Greg C. White
