Austin Williams, 33 year old Farmer, born in Wayne County, N. C., enlisted for the war July 4, 1862 at Goldsboro, N. C. in Capt. Wm. K. Lane’s Company Partisan Rangers* absent in Goldsboro hospital October 31, 1863 remaining through end of year, next recorded present at the February 29, 1864 muster, receipted for an issue of clothing, 3rd Quarter, 1864, signing with an ‘X’, ”his mark,” last recorded present at the October 20, 1864 muster, no further records

* This company also known as Company F, Claiborne’s Regiment Partisan Rangers, was subsequently designated as Company F, 7th Regiment Confederate Cavalry. Regiment was broken up in July, 1864 and assigned to the 16th Battalion North Caroline Cavalry as Company C

Austin Williams, Private, Company C, 16th Battalion North Carolina Cavalry, captured March 25, 1865 at Goldsboro, N. C. sent to Provost Marshal at New Berne, March 26 having subscribed to the Oath, forwarded from Fort Monroe, Va., to Washington, D. C., April 2, 1865, subsequently furnished transportation to Goldsboro, N. C.

Note, there is no indication in the records why he at home in Goldsboro when captured, while his unit was in the trenches at Petersburg, Va
