According to family lore, my g-g-grandfather Samuel Tilden Allen (S.T. Allen) was made a Captain in the Randolph Co. Home Guard. Had a 400-acre plantation near Star. Story goes that his unit was posted near Troy (which I believe is in Montgomery Co.?) He was born in Randolph Co. NC on or about 1-6-1830; died Pana Illinois November of 1886.

Anybody know how I can verify his war record, or learn of the rosters & activities of the Randolph and Montgomery Co. Home Guards?
