Union injustices after the war

My gggrandfather was with the 6th NC Cavalry/65th State troops. He was a teamster and forager for the army. He amazingly didn't see any action during the war. It was after the war heading home on his mule when some of Sherman's men attacked him and his fellow returning Confederate soldiers. He was shot once in the arm and twice in the leg. He tried to escape but fell off the mule when he was shot. The Yankee soldiers left him for dead. It took 3 months for him to recover after his fellow returning veterans found him.

I wonder how many of his fellow Confederate vets didn't make it???
