Would like to know about my gg-grandfather William W. Virdin, MD (1829-1898). What unit did he serve with, what battles did his unit fight?

Dr. Virdin served in the Confederate Army as a surgeon. There is a good write-up of Dr. Virdin at:

but it does not mention the unit that he served with. (the Source of the information on the above webpage is my Aunt, unfortunately she doesn't know what unit Dr. Virdin served in either!)

Dr. Virdin's wife, Katernine Emily Lewis Dunn, was from Bladen County, NC and that he joined the Confederate Army there. The few letters that we have from the Virdins
during this time period are from Stone Lick, NC. Stone Lick is probably a local name; I have not been able to locate mention of it on the Web (using search engines).
