Benjamin Hawkins Tyson/Hampton Legion

Benjamin Hawkins Tyson enlisted in Co B/St. James Mounted Rifles, Manigualt's Battalion in Mar 1862, and transferred to Co A/Hampton Legion Mounted Infantry May 1864. He was paroled (mounted) at Appomattox. He apparently was a life-long resident of eastern North Carolina, and died in 1932, and is buried in Wilson. For a time late in his life, he commanded the N. C. Brigade of the United Conf. Veterans. How did he happen to enlist in South Carolian units, and what did he do postwar.
