The last man killed East of the Mississippi, was Pvt. James Arwood, 2nd NC Mtd. Inf., USV, killed at White Sulphur Springs(Waynesville), North Carolina on May 6, 1865, in a skirmish with Lt. Robert Conley's Company of the Thomas Legion.
Thanks Len for refreshing the old brain cells. LOL. I once asked and answered that question on the News& Views site. It of course took some convincing with the legion of Mississippians over there. :-) My family knew some Arwood, Aarwood, Arowoods around Murphy and Andrews NC.
