Nick, just like "Martin", "Roberts" is a common name here in the United States. If you can tell us from what county or counties you presume your ancestors were from, it makes it easier to cut down the list to something more manageable.

Civil War era regiments were divided into lettered companies, A-Z, and these companies were normally recruited from only one or two counties. It's not uncommon in these Civil War era companies to have fathers, sons, brothers, cousins, uncles and other family relations serving together. Many believe this method of recruiting from the same area with family & friends fighting alongside, led to the horrendous casualties and dogged determination of many of the Civil War units. To shirk ones duty, even in the face of almost certain death or injury, was unthinkable as all of your family, your friends and your home community would be aware of your service.

Try to get us a little more and I'm sure we'll be able to provide some hints and direction.

Jim Martin
