Re: A letter from the 45th North Carolina

Incidentally, at Gettysburg on 1 July about 1:30 pm the 45th North Carolina advanced against the 149th Pennsylvania, first driving these Yankees back into the railroad cut and taking some prisoners there, and then being driven back in turn about 250 feet when the 149th made a second charge toward the cut a few minutes later. This action took place at the "first" cut north of the McPherson buildings and the Chambersburg Pike, not at the "second" cut just to the east where the 6th Wisconsin fought Davis' brigade earlier in the day. Many if not most of the 45th's casualties on 1 July would have been caused by the 149th's men, although the 143rd and 150th Pennsylvania regiments likely fired a few shots in their direction as well.
