Maybe I am over simplifying the matter, but I believe if a man volunteered to join one army and took an oath to his country(without a gun to his head), then he would be a traitor for joining the enemies army, especially if he took up arms against the former. Not to paint them all with a broad brush, because I recall Bryan Howerton warning me not to be judgemental about all of the galvanizing that took place in Central Arkansas where resistance to conscription could be brutal towards enitre families. Probably happened elsewhere also, I just have doubts it was the primary motivation for galvanizing. David's posts lists several potential reasons that made me think of my opening line.
