1. Meeting in Chaleston South Carolina, the Democratic National Convention ended in chaos. Southern politicans dismissed the doctrine of "popular sovereignty" as espoused by Douglas as an abandoment of Southern principle.
When the convention approved the moderate Douglas platform, the representatives from Alabama walked out, followed first by Mississippi and then other Southern states. One of the Mississippi delegation climbed on a chair predicting that "in less than 60 days there would be a United South." With this, Murat Halstead recorded, "the South Carolinians cheered loud and long."
