Surely you don't doubt that the South would have seceded had Seward, Chase or even Bates been elected. The fact of the matter is Lincoln was more moderate on slavery than Seward and Chase, as anyone who has ever read any speech, that those three gentlemen gave in the 1850's would know. You have read their campaign and pr-campaign speeches have you not?
