It was the free black companies of Andrew Jackson's army at the Battle of New Orleans that are given credit to doing the lions share of damage to the British. One of them killed Major General Pakenham, the British army commander.
What? Blacks serving in an Army raised in the South? Before the Civil War? Yes.
