I don't doubt that at all. One would imagine that they would transcript their stories so most could read them. Though I can read Chaucer in Middle English (having worked on it at OSU)I find it hard to make out some of the dialect in Huckleberry Finn. No doubt, even my Quaker ancestors, familiar in dealings with blacks, would feel the same.
