For those of you who call all those who galvanized traitors, think back to the revolution. Many British and many Hessions (spelling?) "deserted" and fought for the colonists. The British call them traitors, we call them "heroes". I think it depends on the side you support(ed).
Unfortunately, we live in an age where we are blinded by our own ideas and ideals and don't consider the other side's point of view, or if we do consider it, we discard it as unimportant or irrelevant.
I see those who galvanized as doing it for three main reasons:
1) self preservation
2) convenience
3) change in "political views.

I read a couple of Civil War letters several years ago in which an Arkansas soldier who fought with the CSA "galvanized" in 1863 because, in his words, he was disgusted with the way things were going and with the commanding officers and their inability/inefficency/stupidity.
I'm sure some of the Yanks who galvanized to the CSA felt the same way.
