The Union needed alot of stuff to pursue their War upon the Southern States which required, and I'm guessing here, selling government bonds. This created a need, which created work. More Workers caused more spending. The Irish coming in supplied both soldiers and factory workers. Stewart's Department store provided necessities to that working class. I think there is more to serving the War's needs than is visible on the surface.
