Captain Wirz

We had a very productive weekend here in Kentucky. Friday we had living history demonstrations for about 160 elementary students in Caldwell County. This included 20 flags of the period including the Battle Flag. Sunday we had a memorial service and dedication for the widow of Captain Henry Wirz. His wife, Elizabeth had been buried in an unmarked grave in Trigg County. She now has a granite marker. Capt. Wirz's great-nephew, Col. Heinrich Wirz from Zurich, Switzerland attended the ceremony along with his Aide-de-Camp. James Gaston, Current Chairman of the Capt. Wirz Exoneration Committee spoke along with several KY SCV and UDC members. I bought a book entitled "Captain Henry Wirz and Andersonville Prison, a Reappraisal." It is authored by R. Fred Ruhlman, a former special agent for the FBI and currently adjunct professor at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. It is copyrighted 2006 by the University of Tennessee Press. I am about halfway through it and it is very readable and seems to be unbiased. It is actually sympathetic to Capt. Wirz. The first chapters of the book give a very good account of the early negotiations between the north and south dealing with prisoner exchanges.
